Hello Ugo and commentators. I attempted to restack this piece along with the noah opinion article on the aging population of the middle east here on substack.com.
I probably failed at that (I don't understand Substack).
His point was the Israel Palestine war will probably not spread to the other surrounding countries b/c they have older populations. Some do, but not all. Egypt and much of Northern Africa is quite young. Eastern Europe also.
I think these will be hard conflicts to contain , irregardless of the ages, b/c of the long history of the conflicts involved and the energy crunch.
The Ukraine and Palestine both have fossil fuel (oil and gas) reserves while Russia and Israel are both nuclear powers.
I am not eve so sure of what "restacking" means. I still have to understand how exactly substack works. But it is surely better than the desolate "blogger" platform.
I thought restack was like bumping a thread on a forum . Nope. At least it didn't work as expected. But yeah, beats Blogger . I can't even find my own old blogs on there to save any old content anymore.
My point was Noah Smith of Noah Opinion cities some peer reviewed demographic studies on conflict zones ( I had no idea they existed, but of course they would).
While your article was about motivations, his was looking at men of fighting age, mostly poor or oppressed as a percentage of population.
Well, I am just back from Egypt, and I can tell you that it is a place full of young people. The population pyramid in Egypt is an almost perfect pyramid. And they know about pyramids, of course!!!
Very interesting point! In Britain, where a few people in the high nobility, including Churchill, pushed the English into a war in which it had nothing to gain--without even a vote in the Cabinet--the propaganda was also intense...Newspapers said that the war would be over by Christmas..Of course, they had said the same thing about the Boer War, which Britain only won by locking up the Boer women and children in concentration camps where more than 20,000 died...
The result was total carnage of British young men, fighting against the superior German Field Army, with whole villages losing every young male..The mortality of the British elites at Oxford and Cambridge was even higher...Tolkien was badly wounded at the Somme, very fortunately, and mustered out..Of all his friends, including an entire rugby team he had put together, only a single one survived...Many promising scientists were eliminated from the gene pool...Britain never really recovered from the 1 million+ deaths, and was bankrupted by the Great War to boot...
Nicely written. Modern times is unlike anything in the past in at least one way--there IS now a war that will end all wars. Unfortunately, it will also end humanity.
Your book sounds interesting; was it ever translated into English?
No... my book was never translated into English. I contacted a few publishers, but they seemed to think that it was too narrow a subject to be of general interest. But maybe one of these days I will self-publish it in English, somewhere.
I don't understand substack either but fwiw I have just recommended this piece & your substck on my recent attempt to create a substack account. If it works (?) I seem to be in contact with people elsewhere willing to discuss evil power. Chthonic entities? Who knows? Give pacifiscm a chance this time round? But we should be careful, as I think you are - the human mind is subtle as you say and evil feeds on opposition. And our modern minds are strange constructs; the March of Progress & Reason and all that.
btw your 'gelderon' twitter account seems to have gone dark.

I haven't really explored there, but it seems that the entire Eastern and Southern Mediterranean basin is young. And distressed.
Someone probably has a similar pyramid of wealth and poverty like the age and sex pyramid we've all seen.
I don't know if I want to know that, TBH. ArtDeco
Erudite
Fascinating. Thank you.
Thanks for your interest!
