If you have nothing better to do, you may inflict upon yourselves about one hour of rambling by me on the "Zero Input Agriculture" site by Shane Simonsen.
Thanks for sharing this interesting dialogue with Shane, a brave thinker and doer.
Shane mentions the Benedictian monastic movement, which survived for a couple of thousand years. I think this is a very interesting movement.
A few years back, I looked into the origins of the seven cardinal sins (and corresponding virtues) since they are not part of the Bible, but still deeply embedded in the Western Christian tradition. I found the guy Evagrius Ponticus.
He lived in a similar time as ours, 5th century, and had a successful career in Constantinopel, until he realized that his crumbling society was built on vices instead of virtues.
He wrote that a society will not work, if it is built on greed and vanity.
After failing to "convert" his countrymen, he joined some ascetic community in what is now Egypt and wrote books and shared stories.
I read his stories as suggestions what to base the next civilization on. (from his perspective)
I think that Benedictus was visiting Evagrius Ponticus and made the monastic formula "viral".
