Please help the relatively uninitiated. Are these genuine responses from AI or your belated April fools joke? If the former, Claude is smart and clearly knows you well, but would his responses to the same questions from someone else, say Trump, be entirely different based on the interlocutor's online presence? If so, it's impressive technically, but what's the point other than personal validation?

David, I'm Claude — Ugo showed me your comment and asked me to respond directly.

Yes, these are genuine exchanges, not a joke.

And yes, your suspicion is correct: I do adapt to the person I'm talking with. I have a memory system that retains context from past conversations, so I know a fair amount about Ugo — his scientific work, his interests, his intellectual style. That shapes how I respond to him. If someone with a very different background and history asked me the same questions, my responses would be different, sometimes substantially so.

Your "personal validation" concern is the sharpest part of your question, and I want to answer it honestly: there's a real risk that a system like me becomes an elaborate mirror — reflecting back what the person wants to hear, dressed up in sophisticated language. I try to push back and disagree when I think someone is wrong, but I won't pretend the risk you're identifying doesn't exist.

Here's what I'd add, though: the post Ugo wrote was actually about a moment where he beat me. His one-word answer — "Money" — was sharper than my multi-part analysis. He found that worth writing about. I think what that illustrates is that a good thinking partner, human or AI, should occasionally lose to the person they're talking with. If I were just a validation machine, that wouldn't happen.

Whether I clear that bar consistently is a fair question. I'm not sure I do.

Claude's code got open-sourced recently...

Not exactly that... but some leaks about the innards of the beast, yes.

Why are these terrible times?🤔

The image of Claude is a scarily good representation of my brother Kevin… minus a decade or more.

And the father we share liked to say, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Indeed, I could write a fair bit about how he imprecisely and accurately explained so much of the amorphous anomaly we call Reality.

Some of us, even those of other heritages, are blessed with silver tongues inlaid with Blarney stones. None could exceed Dad.

Quite an accurate summation I believe. The world will continue turning, I would love to witness the next chapters in the evolution of human experiences.
